Distribution and habitat

Mild and cool climates. Native to Japan.

 

Description

Characterized by slow growth, it can reach a height of about 12 meters. The leaves are leathery, oval and dark green, while the flowers, which in wild forms are simple, white or pink, can take on multiple shades and sizes in the numerous cultivated varieties.

 

Uses and cultivation

Cultivated as an ornamental plant in suitable climates and in acidic, fresh and humus-rich soils.

 

Curiosity

The well-known beverage known as tea is produced from the leaves of a camellia, Camellia sinensis, cultivated in Asian tropical and subtropical areas.
