Distribution and habitat

Native to the southeastern United States.

 

Description

Can reach a height of about 25 meters, and is characterized by a dense, broad, and conical crown. The evergreen leaves are ovate-oblong and leathery, glossy green above, pubescent-ferruginous on the underside. The flowers are white and fragrant, up to 25 cm wide.

 

Uses and cultivation

Widely cultivated as an ornamental plant for the beauty of its flowers and foliage, as well as for its remarkable adaptability: while preferring temperate climates, it is now widespread in many parks and gardens.

 

Curiosity

It was introduced to Europe in the early 1700s.
